Eden Prairie Senior Among National Achievement Scholarship Semifinalists

More than 1,600 Black American high school seniors were named semifinalists Sept. 25.

An International School of Minnesota senior has been named as one of 1,600 semifinalists for the 2014 National Achievement Scholarship Program.

Theodore B. Kepler is in the running for one of approximately 800 awards worth a total of $2.5 million to be given out next spring.

To be considered for a National Achievement Scholarship, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition, according to a release. About 80 percent of semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and more than half of the finalists will win an award.

According to a release, the National Achievement Scholarship Program, which is conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, was initiated in 1964 to recognize academically promising Black students throughout the nation and to provide scholarships to a substantial number of the most outstanding program participants.

Eden Prairie area high schools also boast 17 finalists for the National Merit Scholarship Program.
