Family Identifies Eden Prairie Woman Killed By Tree

A 56-year-old woman was killed Friday, July 5 after a tree fell on her while she was walking on a city trail near Mitchell Lake in Eden Prairie. 

The woman has been identified as Eden Prairie resident Nina Mackay, according to a statement released by family. Mackay's passions were fitness and her two dogs, which she was walking at the time.

At 5:20 p.m., a 911 call came into police that a very large tree had fallen and a woman was screaming. The tree was located near the intersection of George Moran Drive and Belfast Cove.

Mackay was found pinned beneath a basswood tree 30 inches in diameter and was immediately pronounced dead. 

The tree is about 90 years old, but showed no external signs of disease or deteriorating health, according to the city's parks department. At the time of the incident, winds were gusting at approximately 23 miles per hour from the southeast.

Officials are still trying to find out why the tree fell, when it appeared to be healthy.
