Eden Prairie-Based Supervalu Will Cut 600 Minnesota Jobs

1,100 jobs Supervalu will be cut nationwide, primarily jobs at corporate and store-support center offices.

Supervalu, the Eden Prairie based grocery company, announced Tuesday that it will cut 1,100 positions nationwide, as well as 600 in Minnesota.

The reductions include both current positions and open jobs that will not be filled.

Store level employees, such as cashiers, stock staff and department managers, are not affected by the job cuts, according to MPR. "It's primarily jobs at our corporate and store-support center offices," company spokesman Mike Siemienas told the media outlet.

Supervalu's announcement follows the March 21 sale of retailers Albertson's, Jewel, Acme and Shaws/Star Markets, as well as in-store pharmacies at Save-On and Osco. As a result, the remaining organization will require significantly fewer corporate and store support roles and functions making it important that the company restructure its operations and expenses accordingly, according to Supervalu.

Going forward, Supervalu will focus on its three key business units consisting of Independent Business, Save-a-Lot and five strong regional retail banners. These three business units are anticipated to generate more than $17 billion in revenues annually.
