Dog Eats Almost 2 Pounds of Rocks

Gordon, a 7-year-old golden retriever, had to undergo an operation in Eden Prairie after consuming 16 rocks.

An Edina dog with an abnormal appetite had to have emergency surgery Wednesday at BluePearl Veterinary Partners referral medicine hospital in Eden Prairie to remove almost two pounds of rocks he had eaten.

Gordon, a 7-year-old golden retriever had to undergo the operation after consuming 16 rocks weighing in at 1.79 pounds, according to a media release from BluePearl.

According to Gordon’s human, Gordon must have gotten into some river rocks in the garden, but only Gordon would be able to explain why he chose to eat rocks when great food is always accessible.

Dr. Jeff Yu, a board-certified veterinary surgeon with BluePearl, performed the two-hour operation.

"You don’t see too many dogs that eat this many rocks usually,” said Yu. “Most dogs will stop after one or two, but Gordon certainly had quite the hankering for some rocks.”
