Police Arrest Eden Prairie Man for Felony Drug Possession

Police say Nicholas James Sargent had heroin and a prescription anti-seizure medication in his car when he was stopped in Minneapolis for traffic violations.

An Eden Prairie man has been charged with illegally possessing heroin and an anti-seizure medication.

Nicholas James Sargent, 20, is charged with two counts of felony fifth-degree drug possession, each of which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Minneapolis police on patrol stopped Sargent’s vehicle on Nov. 29 near Lowry and Central Avenues Northeast after watching him violate several traffic laws, according to the criminal complaint, signed by Minneapolis Police Officer Matthew Alberts.

As officers spoke to Sargent, they smelled an odor of burnt marijuana coming from inside his car, the complaint charges.

A subsequent search of the car turned up a CD case in the glove compartment holding folded pieces of aluminum foil, which contained suspected heroin, according to the complaint.

Officers also found a pill in the pocket of a jacket in the back seat and identified it as Klonopin, a prescription anti-seizure medication often taken by epilepsy patients. Sargent did not have a prescription for the drug.

The heroin weighed .06 grams, according to the complaint.

Sargent has been released from custody on a $3,000 bond. An omnibus hearing in his case is scheduled Feb. 5 in Hennepin County District Court.
