Loon Endorses Measure to Remove Marriage from State Law
During debate on a same-sex marriage bill, she backed an amendment that would replace marriage with civil unions.
After remaining publically undecided through much of the same-sex marriage debate, Rep. Jenifer Loon (R-District 48B) endorsed a measure from Rep. Tim Kelly (R-District 21A) to remove the term “marriage” from state law for both heterosexual and homosexual couples.
Kelly introduced his amendment to a bill that would legalize same-sex marriage. Loon acknowledged that existing laws are not equal—and said Kelly’s amendment would make things equal without having government impose its definition of marriage across the state.
“This is a topic that is very much in flux right now—and we don’t know where it’s going to lead,” Loon said.
